How Smart is your website Strategy?
How to make the most of GOOGLE to drive traffic.

Over the past few days, I've spoken with several people wanting a small, low-cost website — as long as it looks cool.
This inspired me to write this article because many business owners misunderstand how the Internet really works.
A basic website on its own will attract very little traffic. Our data shows that many small static websites have a bounce rate of around 90%, meaning most visitors leave almost immediately. The result?
If you get even one genuinely interested visitor per month, you're doing well.
So what's the solution? What actually works? Below are the key factors that determine whether your website will succeed.
1. Does Google Know You Exist?
Many people assume Google automatically discovers every website. It doesn't. Google mainly discovers new sites by following links.
If no one links to your website, Google may not even know it's there.
Recommendations
- a) Register with Google Search Console
This tells Google your site exists and allows you to monitor indexing, performance, and errors.
- b) List Your Business on Google Maps
Adding your website to your Google Business Profile improves visibility and helps Google connect your business to local searches.
2. Does Google Like Your Website Setup?
Google follows strict quality standards to keep search results reliable.
If your site doesn't meet these standards, it may appear very low in results — or not at all.
Key Factors to Get Right
Secure Connection (SSL Certificate – HTTPS)
Essential for security and ranking.
Mobile Friendliness
Most people browse on phones, and Google heavily favours mobile-friendly sites.
Page Readability & Performance
Google only spends a short time crawling each site. Slow-loading pages or heavy scripts can stop your pages from being indexed properly.
Sitemap Submission
Helps Google understand your site structure quickly.
Avoid Duplicate Content
Google may penalize—or simply ignore—duplicate pages.
Recommendations
- Ensure your website has an SSL certificate.
- Work with a developer to make your site fully mobile responsive.
- Limit complex or “clever” features to the home page only—keep internal pages clean and fast.
- Generate and regularly update your sitemap.
- Use canonical tags to avoid duplicate content issues (e.g., Google sees mysite.com, www.mysite.com, and mysite.com/index.php as separate pages unless you tell it otherwise).
3. Does Google Like Your Content?
Once Google knows about your site and your technical setup is solid, the next step is creating content Google actually values.
A common mistake is building a single-page website with all content squeezed into it.
While this may look clean on mobile devices, it is not great for SEO.
Google prefers:
Well-organised, multi-page sites
Clear topics
Pages that each focus on a specific service or subject
Example
A finance broker with one page covering all services will rank lower than a competitor who has separate pages for mortgages, investments, insurance, etc.
Recommendations
a) Structure your site with clear URLs (e.g., www.mysite.com/services/loans/mortgages.php).
b) Aim for at least 200 words of meaningful content per page.
c) Wrap your main content in <article> tags so Google can identify it easily.
d) Use the keywords your customers would search for — naturally within the content.
e) Use a Content Management System (CMS).
A CMS lets you regularly update your site, add blogs or news items, and keep the website fresh — all important for SEO.
Final Thoughts
A great-looking website is nice to have — but if no one finds it, it won't help your business.
By ensuring Google can find, understand, and trust your site, you give yourself the best chance of improving online visibility and attracting real customers.
Implement these strategies, stay consistent, and you will see your website's performance grow over time.
